Resorts Kannur
Earlier called Cannanore, Kannur is an important coastal city of Kerala. It is 317km from Cochin and 93km from Calicut. It used to be one of the major trading centres in Kerala. Marco Polo has referred to it as great emporia of spice trade. Arakkal Ali Rajas were the only known Muslim rulers. There’s a palace and a few bungalows now where they had stayed. the Arackal Palace is three km from town. The city was also held by the Kolathiri Rajas, and served as their headquarters.
St Anjelo’s Fort was built in 1505 by the Portuguese and lies three km northwest of Kannur. Commonly called Kannur Kota (Kannur fort), is looks out on to the Moppila Bay, a prominent fishing harbour. The Tellichery Fort was built by the British in 1708 as a military outpost. The fort has a light house. It is located near the Tellichery beach. The Kizhunna Ezhara and Meenkunnu Beaches are located just over 10km from the town. Pythal Mala is a hill station 4,500ft above the sea level. It lies on the Kerala-Karnataka border. You have to trek six km get to the top of the hills.
The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is relatively small, but you can see elephants, bears, sambar, deer and other animals. The famous Sri Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple is located on the banks of the serene Valapattanam river. The snake park nearby is very famous and revered among devotees.
Dharmadom island, three km from Tellichery, earlier called Dharmapattanam. It comes from the popular belief that it was a Buddhist monastery. The Pazhassi Dam is 37km from Kannur. Boating facility is offered here. Kannur is a known centre for art forms and religious art forms, especially Theyyam. A number of festivals are celebrated, too.
